At present, there is no browse or search functionality in this demo site. Our hope is to make the data in the Commons of Geographic Data (CGD) findable through several different search modes as support for future development becomes available.
Users will be able to begin searching by any of four modes:
- select a geographic location of interest,
- use natural language keywords
- select one of the 19 top level themes of the ISO 19115 standard as a starting point for a faceted search
- use controlled vocabulary terms employing any of the thesauri available in the file upload contribution process.
Depending on the initial approach chosen, a user may be able to combine more than one approach, for example, by combining a geographic location with an ISO top level theme, keywords, or controlled vocabulary.
This combination of "ways into" the data will make it possible to browse; to search within general topics; to search for very specific data; or to "orienteer" through the CGD, discovering new data or connections, and then modify the search direction without starting over.
We believe that providing this variety of paths to finding the data should help to make CGD data easy to access by both professionals and the general public.
